While a replacement version of the Smart ForTwo coupe remains at least 2 years away, the minicar builder will launch a refreshed model later this year.

Expected to debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March, the changes seem to be primarily cosmetic.

The new ForTwo gets a larger radiator grille, now with an integrated and chrome-plated Smart brand, flared front fenders, beefy facet sills and a revised front finish that provides the car a much more aggressive look.

There are horizontal daytime LED running lights as an offered choice, and patrons will get a choice of three new wheel designs. Passion models come back customary with a replacement nine-spoke alloy wheel, however 2 decisions for wheel upgrades (a three-spoke and a 3-twin-spoke style) can be offered, both with wider tires.

New colors can be offered for 2013, together with matte anthracite and white (for Brabus Xclusive models, not offered within the United States). Brabus Cabrio buyers in Europe can additionally get a choice of six new soft top colours.

Inside, there’s a replacement crystal gray interior package, that uses a leather and fabric combination for the seats, whereas providing up leather-look trim for door panels, the instrument panel and knee padding.

In Europe, there can be six powertrain choices, starting from the improved-for-2012 ForTwo Electric Drive to the 102-horsepower Smart ForTwo Brabus, which will run from 0--62  mph in below 9 seconds and incorporates a prime speed of 96 mph.

There are 2 “micro hybrid” engine options for European consumers likewise, not to mention a turbodiesel variant that we tend to won’t see on these shores. That’s a shame, since the Smart ForTwo cdi delivers an spectacular 71 mpg rating in Euro-cycle testing (that is a few 20% optimistic compared to our own EPA ratings).

It’s unlikely that U.S. buyers can get additional engine choices for 2013, as Smart sales have been but impressive on these shores. Look for U.S. versions to soldier on with the present 1.0-liter 3-cylinder, good for 70 horsepower and 68 pound-feet of torque.
